Nanotechnology Gets Real - Nanotech machines make for great scifi story elements, but today’s nanotech is more focused on the creation of nano-materials. This video is a great overview of what they can do, and where scientists are at in realizing their promise. In fact their potential to improve human lives on a global scale is so seen as so vast that one researcher goes so far as to call it unethical to not pursue this new branch of science at full-speed-ahead.
Interestingly enough, when it does come to building fully working nano-machines (scifi’s favorite creepy crawlers which can repair your body or eat up a whole planet), nature is already light-years ahead of human science. Most everything that moves inside living things (cells, bacteria, viruses, sperm, etc.) is a protein based nano-machine with parts like gears, bearings, electrical systems, etc. any engineer can recognize … just a whole lot smaller.
