Plasma Germ Blaster - Scientists have developed a cold plasma emitter that can sterilize wounds. The device is a collaboration between Australian and Chinese science groups, and a hand-held version is expected to cost no more than $100.

In the experiment, five minutes of exposure to the plasma ray burned through 25 micrometres of 17 different layers of bacteria. The plasma not only inactivated the top layer of cells, but penetrated deep into the very bottom layers to kill the bacteria.

It’s not quite yet a Star Trek style “dermal regenerator”, but a big improvement over slathering iodine all over a wound, especially in remote scenarios where it is much easier to recharge the device than to replenish a supply of disinfectant. Zoom
